As we get older it is better for most of us to stay in a familiar place where we know people.
Nobody should have to leave the area because they are older or need a little help.
That’s the starting point for our proposal.
How did we create the proposal?
We listened to what people wanted and their experiences.
We looked around at what there was elsewhere.
We spoke to care providers, housing specialists, health professionals.
We imagined what a New Abbey might be like.
… and wrote a proposal to persuade Cumbria County Council to gift us the building.
It’s special because …
The New Abbey Apartments will be only for people who live in Staveley, Ings and surrounding villages.
We want to include everyone – however rich or poor! So, the rents will be good value but there’ll be discounts for those who need them.
We want to help people stay in their own homes and feel safe that there is help available. The New Abbey Hub will work in partnership with care organisations to provide care to people in the locality.
The New Abbey will belong to the village and everyone will be able to shape what it looks like together.
